The Manuka Plant

Its uses:
The Manuka Tree is a native plant to New Zealand. This plant has many uses in medicine, health and can make drinks from tea to beer. In the past, early settlers called this plant the tea tree because they would use the plant as a substitute for tea. They would also make beer by combining rimu(which is another native plant of New Zealand), and twigs from the manuka tree. The wood of the manuka tree was really strong and the Maori would use it for paddles, weapons and for bird spears too.

Manuka Honey:
Did you know that the plant can make honey? If you didn't know, then now you do. This plant doesn't just make any honey, in fact it makes honey that can heal wounds and burn healing. In general it is used for treating minor wounds and burns. Manuka honey is more expensive than normal honey because manuka flowers give manuka honey its health-giving properties.

Habitat:
This plant can grow up to 6-8 metres tall. They are normally found or grown in wetland, river gravels and hillsides. When they are mature enough they would be able to survive in drought areas, strong winds, colder and wetter places too.
