Ngatu Reading

Pu Mahuku🦜BLM🇵🇸 on Twitter: "It is but ngatu is one of the most important pieces material culture to Tongans. When you're born you go in ngatu, you get married ontop of ngatu,

Today Mrs Petersen picked eight students to be in a group together with Miss Myers. Miss Myers is a training teacher, so that means that she is learning to be a teacher. This year is her third year of teaching an next year she can have her own classroom which she can use to actually teach children. Today we had to be in a group with her and we did some reading with her. The text we read with her was called, Ngatu, this passage was really interesting and fun to read. We all learnt some new vocabulary in Tongan like tutu, ngatu, koka'anga, feta'aki and more. This text was about keeping the tradition alive and the tradition was making ngatu. Ngatu is a traditional Tongan mat, which they use for special occasions like weddings, birthdays, funerals, births and a lot more. This text was really connecting because I've also seen my mum and grandmother make ngatu, and it was interesting to watch them make it. Unfortunately, I had forgotten the process of making it, but luckily we read this passage because now I have gained the memories from Tonga and now know the process of making ngatu. I would like to thank Miss Myers for coming into our class today and thank her for the amazing lesson we had with her. It was fun learning with her and reading this text.
