My Experience While Getting my Reward.

Kia Orana everyone, today I'm going to tell you about what my experience was like getting a reward.

Today was the day that us recipients were receiving our awards. There were two recipients from each classroom that were chosen by their teacher. Straight after lunch the recipients had to go to the hall to collect our awards. That's when butterflies rushed into my stomach, I was so scared at first, but when I arrived at the hall there weren't that many people there.

That's when I forgot that only the parents/guardians could come, but it wasn't always like this because we used to have the whole school come and and watch us receive our reward but now it's only the parents. I don't really like it this way, but the only good thing I like about it is that we get snacks like donuts, muffins, chips, sandwiches and water.

Anyways, it was time for the first class up and we started from Room 1 and upwards, the seniors were last. Everything went as usual, we clapped, they sat down and then it was time for the students in my class. The two people that got a award in my class were Peliasi and I. When I heard my name I couldn't stop myself from smiling because I was so proud and happy of myself. Once we had received our awards my mum came up and laid some leis on my neck. If you don't know what a lei is, it's basically lollies wrapped up in plastic wrap, but it doesn't have to be in wrap because you could also tie it onto a flower necklace.

After that, Mr Ramkalawan called up Papiloti and Yolanda, and then Miss Maude took a photo of us, then we walked off into our seats. But, it wasn't finished there, Mr Ramkalawan announced that there was one more award that he was giving away and it was sponsored by Dysart ITM. My friend was guessing that it was me but I doubted that, by surprise, it was me. Again I couldn't stop myself from smiling, I received my award and my older sister came up and handed me a block of chocolate.

Finally, the recognition award assembly was over and it was time for some snacks. Papiloti and I quickly took some photos with our mums, and hurried to the snack table. After we stuffed ourselves with the lovely snacks we went to class and was informed by my other teacher that they went to the Herald Van, so we went over there too. I really enjoyed my day today, and thank you to my teacher, Mrs Petersen, for selecting me to receive this prize.

My Maths Results

On Monday we did a Maths Strand test and I achieved a 5B. I think I got the highest in my class, I'm unsure of that. In fact this is my first time getting a five in Maths this year, so that's great. While doing the test I was very uncomfortable because I was sitting on the floor, because there were no more seats for me to sit on. Even though I didn't have a seat, I still tried my best and used up all my time I had in the test. I hope in my reading test I get a good mark as I did in this one. Nevertheless, I'm proud of myself for achieving this mark.

Our Trip to Te Oro

Today two classes went over to Te Oro and, it was my class and along with us was room 10. Last year I went there with a year eight group and it was really fun, so that's how I knew it was going to be even more fun.

Firstly, we had to walk from school to Te Oro, and it was alright because Te Oro wasn't that far away from our school. Once we got there we had to take our shoes off, and the smell that rushed into my nostrils wasn't very delightful. After that experience they welcomed us into the room they had saved us and we sat down on the whariki (mat). Everywhere in the room were displays and taonga (treasures) of art and plants. All the plants in the room were endemic to New Zealand meaning, that it is native to New Zealand.

One woman, which was the oldest, explained to us what they mean and told us some stories about the Maori culture. After that Matua Logan, which was one of the teachers, asked us a few questions, if you got it right you got a lolly. Then one by one they all introduced themselves and simply explaining to us what we were doing. After everyone had introduced themselves they asked of anyone was there last year and I raised my hand.

Then they said if you were in weaving last year you would have to go to Kotuhituhi which was one of the workshops there. I was in weaving last year along with Riko and we had to go over there a take a seat. The rest of the people got split into three workshops, which was weaving, my group and Kowhaiwhai. We all settled down at our workshops and begun our lessons.

As I said, I was in Kotuhituhi and today I learnt that it means drawing. Our teachers in that time were Whaea Kelly and another Whaea, but unfortunately I had forgotten her name. In front of us was a piece of paper and pencils, Whaea Kelly told us to fold the piece of paper into four quarters which means to fold it in half and then fold in half again. After that we had to open it up, then we started drawing. Today we drew Maori patterns and symbols.

The first pattern was a Koru. As you know a Koru is a part that grows along with the Silver Fern. The Silver Fern is New Zealand's symbol and national plant. This Fern is used in every New Zealand sports team and is also used in Maori art. The Koru was the easiest to draw for me. Our next pattern we drew was the Tino rangatiratanga, this is the Maori translation for the Maori flag. If you don't know what the Maori flag looks like, you can just search up the word Tino rangatiratanga. The third pattern was a Kaokao. I don't really know what the Kaokao is, but it's basically two crescent like figures facing each other, with the letter u drawn onto it after each little line.

The last pattern we've done today was the Taniwha. The Taniwha is a Maori creature that lives in rivers and lakes. It was quite simple drawing this because she explained it really well. Later on, once everyone was finished touching up their drawings, we all went though what we drew an discussed what the meaning was. Our other Whaea then took us outside, and we had to sit on the mat that was just to the left outside.

We sat there and she explained to us about the stones that were in her basket. She said that the stones that were in her basket aren't just any stones, they are special treasures to keep. Another Whaea also joined in and told us a story about the Godwit. Then Whaea handed us each a Taonga and we promised her that we wouldn't lose it and we would look after it.

She sent us back inside and on the table was some paint that was set up, we only had 10 minutes to paint anything onto it. First we had to rub and blow onto the Taonga because that is a way of asking to paint on it. Once we've done that we got on with painting our Taonga. I drew and green spiral going all around my rock, and I got my inspiration from Moana because in the movie it has the heart of Te whiti. Finally we were all done and all gathered back onto the mat.

Finally there were a few people from each group that was chosen to show and tell the people that were in other groups about what we did in our individual groups. Nia-Jaye, Riko and Junior were the people in my group that got chosen and they had to represent our group and explain to the other people about what we did. The rest of the group had to stand behind the presenters.

Sorry for the long writing.

Technology

In Tech my group and I made steak burgers. Steak burgers are basically sliced up steak and bread buns squashed together. These burgers were magnificent, it was so good that I gobbled up the whole thing in class. This also contains lettuce and sauce, but I didn't add any because I wanted to taste it by itself. Nevertheless, today has been a great day and this meal would have to be my favourite meal we've cooked so far. Hopefully next week we bake a desert or even pancakes.

An Awesome Day in Room 6

Can Kids Play Sports This Summer (With the Coronavirus Hanging Around)? – Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic

Today our two teachers were out of class. We had two other teachers teaching us today and they were really cool and fun. As you already know I have mentioned Miss Myers in one of my previous blog post, and I said that she was a great student teacher. Today we got lucky and we got to have her in our class again. Along with her we also had our reliever, Miss Brandes, she was also a great teacher. In class we did our usual routine like Reading, Writing but today we didn't switch for Maths and that was a bummer because I really was looking forward to it, but that was alright because we had a Math test this morning. We haven't got our marks back yet but I think we are next week. Today we also had Soccer and it was really fun because we had one of our coaches back which is, Jusepe and to be honest he's my favourite Soccer coach. After all of our hard work and effort we put in to our work and make our reliever teacher not run away, at the end of the day we got to play some games like, bang, Basketball and golden child. Even our teachers for today joined in and I'm not going to lie but Miss Brandes was pretty good at Basketball. I had an enjoyable day today and hopefully when my teacher comes back we can keep up our amazing work. We didn't take any photos, but here is a image from the web, enjoy!

Family Tree

Today in class we had to make a Google Drawing about our family trees. Our family trees didn't have to contain our siblings, cousins and aunties and uncles, we just had to include the people that made ourselves. In the drawing above is my family tree and what makes me, as you can see there are only Tongan flags an that means that I'm just Tongan nothing else. Our teacher set this task for us to finish and she also said to go as far back as we could and I could only go back up to my parents grandparents. I had a enjoyable conversation with my parents today and they told me about some of the memories they had with their grandparents.

22nd June Test

23rd June Test

Yesterday and Today my class and I had to do a test on maths. In this test were all of the things we've learnt in the past months. In both tests I have achieved 4A and to me that isn't really what I wanted, I wanted to go into the 5's because even last term I got a 4A. Nevertheless, I am still happy with my test results and hopefully  tomorrow I get a higher mark and improve my score.

Ngatu Reading

Pu Mahuku🦜BLM🇵🇸 on Twitter: "It is but ngatu is one of the most important pieces material culture to Tongans. When you're born you go in ngatu, you get married ontop of ngatu,

Today Mrs Petersen picked eight students to be in a group together with Miss Myers. Miss Myers is a training teacher, so that means that she is learning to be a teacher. This year is her third year of teaching an next year she can have her own classroom which she can use to actually teach children. Today we had to be in a group with her and we did some reading with her. The text we read with her was called, Ngatu, this passage was really interesting and fun to read. We all learnt some new vocabulary in Tongan like tutu, ngatu, koka'anga, feta'aki and more. This text was about keeping the tradition alive and the tradition was making ngatu. Ngatu is a traditional Tongan mat, which they use for special occasions like weddings, birthdays, funerals, births and a lot more. This text was really connecting because I've also seen my mum and grandmother make ngatu, and it was interesting to watch them make it. Unfortunately, I had forgotten the process of making it, but luckily we read this passage because now I have gained the memories from Tonga and now know the process of making ngatu. I would like to thank Miss Myers for coming into our class today and thank her for the amazing lesson we had with her. It was fun learning with her and reading this text.

Technology

Hello fellow bloggers, here is another amazing, high quality blog post. Today we had Technology again and in class we made popcorn chicken and potato wedges. It was divine, I didn't have breakfast this morning but luckily we made a full course meal. This made me so full I didn't even finish it, so I saved it for my siblings. I had so much fun today, and sadly I didn't come to school last Tuesday because of personal reasons,  and they made some really good looking food.

Otai Advertisement

In class we are currently focusing on procedural writing and basically what that is, is telling the person or group a list of instructions like instructions to a place, a recipe, rules of a game and many more. Last week we had to make an advertisement of a traditional food we picked and I picked otai, so we had to make an advertisement about that food and make it like we are actually selling it. We had to put the time and date its going to happen and insert some pictures, and also say what we are going to sell on the menu, so this is my advertisement in the slideshow above.

My Tsunami Animation

Last week we were reading a book called The Strength of Roots, and what this book is telling you is that the roots of a tree is strong because there was a boy that was caught in a tsunami and was washed up all the way into the top of a tree. This a an interesting book, and in the slideshow above is a animation I've created a few days ago but never posted it, so here it is. Enjoy!

My DLO About Angles

In class we were learning about angles and in my opinion it was really fun learning new angles. To be honest I already knew what these angles were, but this really help refresh my mind. In the slideshow above is a little DLO about angles, sorry I lied about it being a little slideshow there is a lot of words and slides to go through, so might as well get comfy and get a snack because it's a little to long.

The Many Uses of the Coconut Tree

Today I made a slide about The Many Uses of the Coconut Tree. Each slide is a different topic of the different parts of the coconut tree. Coconuts are actually one of my least favourite fruits, but I do like how it has a lot of different uses, and I'm sorry to all those coconut lovers. Coconuts and I just don't get along so well. I hope you will learn a lot about coconuts and realise that you don't know that much about this plant.

Word Art

In the picture above is a picture of a project I've done on word art. Word art is a site that creates things like what is in the picture. You can chose any shape from Animals to Zodiac Signs, you can add words that relates to the shapes you chose, you can change the layout and font too. In class my class and I had to create a project that had to do with where you came from and what you are. Take your time and have a close look to the words I have inserted into this project.

The Manuka Plant

Its uses:
The Manuka Tree is a native plant to New Zealand. This plant has many uses in medicine, health and can make drinks from tea to beer. In the past, early settlers called this plant the tea tree because they would use the plant as a substitute for tea. They would also make beer by combining rimu(which is another native plant of New Zealand), and twigs from the manuka tree. The wood of the manuka tree was really strong and the Maori would use it for paddles, weapons and for bird spears too.

Manuka Honey:
Did you know that the plant can make honey? If you didn't know, then now you do. This plant doesn't just make any honey, in fact it makes honey that can heal wounds and burn healing. In general it is used for treating minor wounds and burns. Manuka honey is more expensive than normal honey because manuka flowers give manuka honey its health-giving properties.

Habitat:
This plant can grow up to 6-8 metres tall. They are normally found or grown in wetland, river gravels and hillsides. When they are mature enough they would be able to survive in drought areas, strong winds, colder and wetter places too.

The Manuka Tree (Google Form)

Pink Manuka Flowers Grown In New Zealand Stock Photo - Image of flower, white: 60375288

Today my class and I had to make a google form about the plant we each chose. I chose the manuka plant. Here is a quick fact about this plant. Early settlers used to call this plant the "tea tree" because they would use the green leaves of the plant, they also used the twigs and some rimu to make beer. Click on the link above to fill in the form and maybe also learn a thing or two from my form.
